Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to another rather than generating their own heat like a traditional electric water heater. This makes them two to three times more efficient, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). Think of a heat pump water heater as a refrigerator working in reverse.
Heat pump water heaters are sometimes called “hybrid” water heaters because, during periods of high hot water use, they can switch to standard electric resistance heat automatically.
