Why is Residential Lighting so important?

Residential lighting is lighting used for Residential spaces such as apartments, houses, villas, and other Residential buildings in order to illuminate the space.

Residential lighting solutions are carefully designed solutions created to provide beneficial and functional lighting to Residential spaces. A professional Residential lighting solution will not only enhance and transform a space area, but would also increase visibility, highlight focus areas, set the mood of a space, and also directly impact the wellbeing and mental health of individuals within the space.

Residential Lighting Turns House into a Home

Beautiful upstairs house with large windows and exterior LED lights.

People are spending more time at home profiling their needs, making it a place to work, a place to socialise, a place to relax. Lighting is a key element in a safe, comfortable, and attractive home. Lighting should complement homeowners’ lifestyles, daily challenges, and needs with the quantity and quality of illumination.

It’s quite true to say that quality Residential lighting design turns a house into a home. If the house has the most beautiful interior design and fantastic architecture, but poor lighting, it won’t feel cozy, pleasant, and enjoyable.

Quality Residential lighting improves the interior design and architecture but also affects how people feel about being in the space. Residential lighting gives you the opportunity to create a perfect mood in your home by installing proper energy-efficient lighting. Residential lighting breathes life into your home and its surrounding atmosphere.

A home is a challenge to properly light because it has more than one purpose for life. Proper lighting adds drama and beauty to rooms, makes smaller rooms look more open and airy, larger rooms feel cozy and pleasant, office-home rooms feel more bright and effective. Proper Residential lighting lets homeowners enjoy their home to its full potential.

Quality Residential lighting can transform even the simpler rooms into something truly fantastic. The play of light and shade over a flat surface is like painting with light. Especially, with a wide offer of colour lights to fit any purpose.

What to Consider When Lighting a Residential Space?

When lighting a Residential space, a “one size fits all” approach is not going to work, because different rooms require different lighting. The lighting design in Residential space needs to be from the same family of luminaries for cohesiveness in the design. It is important to layer the light – ambient, task, accent, and decorative, to get the best balance of light in the space.

Lighting typically uses 12-15% of the electricity used in the home. For best energy efficiency in homes, dimming controls can reduce energy costs by lowering light levels to conserve energy and increase lamp life.

For Residential lighting, it is important to observe:

  • Size and shape of the space
  • Movement  patterns through the home
  • Purpose of the room
  • The ceiling height and shape
  • Age of the persons living in the space
  • Colour of the walls
  • Artwork and highlight areas
  • Families of luminaries

Residential home lighting has also found a purpose outdoor, to light your home’s exterior. Residential lighting will brighten a dark walkway and bring your yard out of the evening shadows with properly placed lighting. For both reasons of security and pure enjoyment, time clocks and photocells can be easily installed, and you will never again have to worry about “flipping a switch” to reap the benefits of the lighting outside your home.

LED Lighting Technology

LED lighting technology provides Residential spaces with plenty of options when creating a carefully designed Residential lighting solution.

The latest LED technology can be used to cover the entire range of daylight, from a cold white morning light of 6,500 Kelvin, to a warmer 3,600 Kelvin light colour with less blue, down to a relaxing 2,700 Kelvin, simulating an evening sunset.

With the ability to mimic different lighting temperatures and change lighting levels, LED lighting offers the user a great deal of freedom to customise the light to fit their personal requirements. LED lighting is also significantly more energy-efficient than conventional technologies, making LED lighting a great economical product.

A variety of light sources are available for Residential spaces. The most common are incandescent and fluorescent lights, but with LED lights now beginning to concrete the market with all the benefits that are providing, it is a good idea to focus on Residential LED lighting solutions. Create a bespoke LED lighting system for your Residential space to boost comfort and convenience.

You’re staying in your house for a longer period of time, investing in LED bulbs makes wise financial sense.

You’re running lights 24/7 in frequently used areas of the home such as kitchen,  living room, bathroom, porch/outdoor lighting...

You have a light fixture that is hard to access, so frequently changing light bulbs isn’t desirable.

You want to be more environmentally friendly and reduce your carbon footprint.

You often forget to switch off lights when leaving the house, because LEDs emit very little heat and are safe without supervision.

Residential LED lighting for every room in the house

Indoor LED lights

LEDs are a great solution for both indoor and outdoor lighting requirements in Residential properties. Indoor Lighting plays a major role in daily lives, both in the workspace and when you take time off at home.

For instance, having the right indoor lighting is important when spending hours reading a book or enjoying cooking dinner in the kitchen, working intensely by the desk, or reading stories in the children’s room before bed. All of these activities require the appropriate lighting in order for the atmosphere to be just right.

LED Lights for Kitchen

Kitchens have become the ultimate multi-use room, a certain point for the home, and are used for a variety of tasks, including cooking, eating, working, cleaning, and hanging out, so it needs to be very well lit.

Many of us start our mornings in the kitchen, so those blue-light emitting LED Globes over the counters will help make us alert and awake while prepping breakfast. On the one hand, it is important to avoid accidents while cutting or chopping food, and on the other hand to avoid straining your eyes. After all, insufficient light is considered bad for the eyes.

If you also have a table in your kitchen, a dimmable overhead fixture with a warmer colour temperature can create a nice ambiance to balance out the brighter blue lights over the kitchen counters. Dimmers in your kitchen allow you to dim the lights for a more romantic atmosphere, or raise the lights for adequate task lighting for hobbies and other work.

On a cooking island, LED Downlights in the ceiling provide enough light. Kitchens need plenty of ambient and task lighting to be efficient and functional. For traditional kitchens with wall cabinets, LED lighting is an excellent choice. You can add under-cabinet LED lights to add visual interest and illuminate your work surfaces, combined with LED Downlights in your ceilings to reduce shadows and glare.

LED panels are great for smaller kitchens. LED panels ceiling lights provide general lighting and have a modern, minimalist design. They are ultra-flat and do not take up more space than they absolutely need. This is a great benefit, especially where there are low ceilings and limited space.

Eco Origin LED panel lights to have indirect light and a pleasant glow to the eye, even at the higher light levels, and are light approved under New South Wales Energy Saving Scheme and Victorian Energy Upgrade Initiative for various types of residential spaces.

If your kitchen has a lot of corners and angles with no appropriate lighting, the solution is LED Spot light. LED Spotlights make your kitchen lighting flexible and are available as one-bulb versions as well as with several bulbs. Multiple-bulb LED Spotlights can be flexibly rotated and pivoted, making it easier to achieve the perfect light in all the corners of the kitchen.

As the kitchen is becoming more and more a comfort zone and place to spend time in, decorative kitchen lighting is also playing an increasingly important role. Indirect lighting creates a comfortable atmosphere throughout the room. These can be individual LED Spotlights integrated into the wall units that light the area up to the ceiling or LED Downlights built into the worktops that illuminate the lower third of the room.

If you have existing cans, low voltage LED Globes are a great option because they are easy to install and emit energy-efficient illumination that is still powerful and bright.

LED lights for dining room

Lighting in the dining room should be beautiful and functional. Typically, a chandelier or LED light track system and elegant glass shades above the dining room table is the focal point of a room.

A chandelier can be both decorative and functional for providing general light, with LED Globe fixtures. LED Globes are commonly used in the dining room due to their energy-saving capability, lower heating, beautiful colour, and light output.

To improve dining room decor, dimmers with chandeliers or ceiling lights will create a more comfortable space and reduce glare over the table. For an eco-friendly lighting solution, warm dim LED fixtures and LED bulbs to save energy while offering a comforting, amber glow.

Recessed or track lighting provides ambient lighting and highlights any prized possessions in the room such as artwork or sculpture. Under-cabinet lighting is a perfect accent to a china cabinet, highlighting beautiful china or silverware.

LED lights for living room

Living room with the kitchen illuminated with LED lights.

The living room is usually where families spend most of their quality time for general entertaining like watching television, working on the computer, playing games, doing homework, and reading. So, the correct light levels must be incorporated to suit each person’s needs, activity, and mood.

To illuminate the whole living room properly, LED ceiling lights are the most important fixture. This can be a single LED Panel with several integrated lights, multiple LED Spot lights that can be strategically adjusted, or a classic hanging LED light. In a large or L-shaped living room, individual LED spot lights integrated into the ceiling are a good choice. They ensure optimal illumination of the entire room and are a perfect solution when replacing existing halogen light. Flexible track lighting is a smart choice for living rooms because it can provide ambient, task, or accent lighting.

Accent lighting in the living room should be focused on artwork, sculptures, and architectural details. LED Spot lights can, for example, be used to attract the necessary attention to a picture or a painting on a living room wall. As ceiling spotlights, they provide the necessary general lighting.
LED Down lights which are embedded discreetly in the wall are a great fit for living rooms. LED downlights come with a sleek look in homes, are easy to install, and come in dimmable or non-dimmable formats. A dimmable LED downlights create the basis for versatile living room lighting from bright white light to cosy warm light. They produce enough light and are energy-efficient.

LED lights for bedroom

The primary goal of the bedroom space is to support our sleep behavior, which requires an intentional lack of light. Because it’s also often used for reading and watching TV,  bedrooms usually have some sort of ambient lighting combined with task lighting to fulfill all its needs.

In order to be able to orientate and move safely in the half-sleepy state early in the morning, a bright light, which illuminates the entire bedroom evenly, is highly recommended. The type of fixture used for the general lighting depends on the size of the bedroom.

For a smaller, light-colored bedroom, a ceiling fixture is mostly sufficient because they don’t need as much ambient lighting. Also, a lot of mirrors in the bedroom may be enough reflective light from other lighting sources to compensate.

For larger rooms, a rail system in combination with LED spot lights is a recommended solution. A darker-coloured bedroom needs some more ambient lighting, as dark colors absorb more light. A warm colour temperature will help to create a cosy atmosphere in the bedroom since it is softer and easier on the eyes than a cool-toned temperature.

Avoiding cool-toned temperatures, called blue light waves in the bedroom, will keep your natural circadian rhythm in balance, allowing your brain to produce the melatonin needed for a comfortable sleep.

Using dimmers gives the ability to control different light levels independently, so the room can adapt to different moods as desired. If you don’t want to choose between soft atmospheric lighting and bright visibility, dimmable LED downlights are the perfect solution as you can adjust the light intensity as needed.

Choosing the right type of lights for your bedroom can significantly influence the quality of your sleep. The right LED lights for the bedroom will allow you to set the mood and adjust the brightness with ease, making sure you can read a book without straining your eyes and enjoy a cosy atmosphere in the glow of warm-colored LEDs.

LED lights for home office

Now more than ever, the home is becoming a place for work, which means that the home office is taking higher importance in the household.

A home office is also a place for homework and research, paperwork, and bills. In order to be focused and productive, it is important to create a comfortable environment free of harsh contrasts and distracting glare, especially on computer monitors.

A home office room isn’t necessary to have as much ambient lighting, since accent and task lighting can usually provide enough illumination. Although darker offices require more ambient lighting as dark colours absorb more light.

Task lighting should focus on work areas. A track LED lighting over the desk or area helps illuminate details and prevent eye strain. Pictures and professional certificates can be accented by LED Spot lights.

The most similar solution for the lack of natural sunlight are LED lights. Switching to LED lights creates a space that is enjoyable to work in and a home office where you want to spend your time. Putting cool-white energy-efficient LED Globes in the home office that mimic daylight will increase serotonin production, keeping you focused, alert, and energized.

LED lights for garage

A well-constructed garage is not just a place to store your cars, but it can also serve multifunctional purposes such as workshops for a variety of projects, including painting, repairing, and assembly. It is vital that garages and workshops are sufficiently illuminated since the garage lighting makes car repairs and other tasks much more efficient as well as safer.

The good garage lights should be bright enough while also having the feature of energy-efficient and longevity. A combination of layers of light is required to turn your garage into an effective and functional space.

General garage lighting should be less directed and more on the diffused side to avoid glare and harshness. For garage lighting, the wattage is limited to three watts per square meter of floor space. If you have dedicated areas in your garage for work spaces, task lighting is more focused and direct than general lighting. With motion sensor-activated LED lights, you get illumination only when you absolutely need it. Garage LED lighting can make a huge difference in how you are able to use your space, no matter the size of the garage.

One of the best benefits of LED lights is that their life span is not affected by the number of times they are turned on and off. Unlike conventional lighting, which can take time to warm up, LED lights can be turned on in nanoseconds. They radiate very little heat, so you don’t have to worry about the heat from a bulb damaging something you might be working on, such as a paint finish or glue.

LED lights for bathroom

The wrong lighting in a bathroom can be unflattering or even unsafe. Bathroom lighting needs to be just right to match every time of day and every demand. Safety, function, and aesthetics are primary considerations when lighting a bathroom. The light should be bright enough, even and shadow-free.

Recessed lighting, usually in the form of LED Downlights or LED Spot lights, is typically found within a ceiling cavity. Recessed lighting can be used in virtually every room in the home, especially the bathroom. However, it should not be used to provide all the layers of light required in a design.

A recessed ceiling LED light provides general lighting that helps you to become situated when you enter the bathroom, plus it provides background lighting for tasks at the mirror and counter. Recessed lighting is ideal for the bathroom as it casts comfortable, glare-free illumination. The great value of installing recessed lights in the bathroom is that it saves space. Small bathrooms especially can benefit from a recessed light.

LED Spot lights are a great way to offer task lighting in a bathroom. Placing LED Spotlights with the correct IP rating (the measurement of protection that LED light will have against liquid and solid objects) above the shower is very useful, but often missed.

One of the most underrated task lights in the bathroom is the light for the mirror. This direct task light can make shaving and applying make-up in the morning a lot easier. Lights that point down at the mirror will produce unwanted shadows, so placing LED lights on each side of mirrors will provide more balanced lighting which can be controlled with the same switch as the main light, or on a separate switch.

Outdoor LED lights

A well-thought-out lighting plan for the outdoor area of the Residential is important in many ways. With cool, blue LED lights, ensures safety around the house, and with warm LED lights creates a cosy, sociable mood in the garden area. With the latest LED technology, lighting the outdoor area of the house all night is possible while excessive electricity bills are a thing of the past.

Benefits of outdoor LED lights

  • Conventional exterior lights usually use 20-30 watt light bulbs, but LED lights to use more efficient LED Globes, requiring less changing and saving money.
  • LED lights can handle harsh weather conditions like snow, rain, and excessive heat.
  • Colour changing without having to change the lamp is another reason LED lights are a great choice.
  • LED bulbs use a lot less energy and heat than traditional bulbs, so they are environmentally-friendly
  • LEDs are brighter than traditional lamps, helping better illuminate surroundings.
  • Traditional lighting takes time and heat to warm up and turn on. As LED lights need little heat to operate, they are always instant-on, even in below-freezing weather.
  • Unlike other outdoor lighting, LEDs are manufactured with durable materials such as plastic.
  • LED outdoor lighting doesn’t emit ultraviolet light, which means that it will not attract moths, mosquitos, and other insects.

LED outdoor lights not only illuminate patios with energy-saving LED Globes, but are also ideal for house entrances or driveways. Another important aspect of outdoor lighting is protection against burglars.

For people who aspire to create a beautiful and safe home for their family, LED PAR38 45 degree floodlights to provide brighter light, a longer lifetime, and the possibility of dimming. How are LED lights different from any other lights?

What is Incandescent Light?

Residential building with outdoor pool and track LED lights inside and outside the house.

The incandescent light is a classic light bulb that produces light by heating a wire filament to a temperature that results in the generation of light. The metal wire is surrounded by a translucent glass bulb that is either filled with an inert gas or vacuum.

This traditional light bulb is one of the worst in terms of energy efficiency. Incandescent bulbs typically only last about 1200 hours. These light bulbs also require a lot more watts and electricity. Incandescent bulbs typically don’t shine as bright as CFL and LED bulbs.

What is a Fluorescent Light or a CFL?

Fluorescent light bulbs are a specific type of gas-discharge light also known as a high-intensity discharge (HID). CFL or “compact fluorescent light” is a much smaller compact tube than Standard fluorescent lights, which are available in long tubes.

As the fluorescent light ages, more and more voltage is required to produce the same amount of light. Eventually, the voltage exceeds the fixed resistance provided by the ballast and the light goes out. Fluorescent lights become less and less efficient over time because they must use more and more voltage to produce the same lumen output as the light degrades.

Do LED Lights Make a Difference?

LED lights are different from incandescent and fluorescent lights in several ways. The most important 5 differences are:

  • LED lighting is more energy-efficient compared to traditional lighting solutions. LED lights use up to 90% less power.  The LED lighting technology provides the ideal light in an energy-saving and environmentally friendly way.
  • LED lights produce very little heat- Incandescent lamps generate only about 5% light from the energy fed in, the remaining 95% is converted into heat. LEDs generate a much lower heat per wattage applied when compared to other bulbs, so the LED lifespan is much longer. About 40% of the used energy is converted into visible light and only 60% into heat.
  • LEDs do not contain mercury- LED lights to contain no mercury (heavy silvery transition metal), making LEDs the safest lighting solution for any home, office, or workspace. This explains why CFL and fluorescent bulbs require careful handling and disposal if they burn out or get broken.
  • LED lights operate in low voltage- Low-voltage LED lighting draws less power than standard voltage, which is connected with lower lighting costs for the entire household. This means LED lights can be safely left on for extended periods of time.
  • LED lighting offers big cost savings-While LED lights are more expensive than halogen, incandescent, or fluorescent lights, they have a longer lifespan, so they are providing savings over a long period of time. That means that the LED bulbs don’t have to be changed for years.

Are LED lights a good investment for a home?

LED lights are good investment for home, especially if:

  • You’re staying in your house for a longer period of time, investing in LED bulbs makes wise financial sense.
  • You’re running lights 24/7 in frequently used areas of the home such as kitchen,  living room, bathroom, porch/outdoor lighting…
  • You have a light fixture that is hard to access, so frequently changing light bulbs isn’t desirable.
  • You want to be more environmentally friendly and reduce your carbon footprint.
  • You often forget to switch off lights when leaving the house, because LEDs emit very little heat and are safe without supervision.

If you invest in LED bulbs for your Residential space right now, you’ll start saving money right away. True, it will take a little time for those savings to pay back the initial investment, but they almost certainly will pay back that investment, and much more.

Goals of Residential LED lighting

The quantity and quality of LED lights, the impression they create in the Residential space, and the effect they have on the appearance of the space are all factors in a successful lighting solution.

With Residential LED lighting solutions, the main goals are to:

  • Create a warm and enjoyable environment, while making it functional and safe.
  • Integrate and combine ambient, task, decorative, and accent lighting into every room, for a variety of use possibilities.
  • Establish a path of illumination through the house to allow comfortable transition and movement from one room to another.
  • Enhance the character of the Residential space by highlighting areas of interest.
  • Design a flexible lighting scheme and a system that is easy to maintain.
  • Address energy efficiency into your home.

Layers of Residential LED lighting

There are four layers of light typically used in Residential lighting:

  • General (ambient) LED lighting,
  • Task LED lighting
  • Accent LED lighting
  • Decorative LED lighting

Every layer is necessary for different parts of your home, and they can even crossover. Combining and balancing these lighting types creates a more attractive, positive, and pleasant environment. A properly lit room can make a huge difference in the quality of life and affection towards your home.

General (ambient) LED Lighting

Luxury villa with private pool illuminated with indoor and outdoor LED lights.

General lighting, also known as ambient lighting, is the main source of illumination for a room. Its purpose is to provide broad lighting for the entire space, more specifically for orientation and general tasks. But it also directly influences the overall ambiance and mood, which is why it is often referred to as ambient lighting. Ambient lighting should radiate a comfortable level of brightness and provide a sense of relaxation.

The most common sources for ambient lights are LED downlights and LED Globes.

LED Downlights primary purpose is to provide functional ambient light throughout the home. Their discreet appearance, practicality, and amazing ability to blend well with other lights such as LED Spot lights make them an excellent lighting staple.

LED Globes can be used for ambient lighting to provide general, diffuse illumination for a Residential space.

The amount of ambient LED light needed to reduce shadows and create a sense of comfort will depend on the room itself, its function, and overall size and shape.

Task LED Lighting

Mother and son reading a book before bed time under the LED light.

Task lighting provides illumination for a specific task giving a focused, localised, and higher level of illumination. Necessary to the functioning of space, it is important to use energy-efficient sources to reduce operating costs, such as LED lights.

The function of task lighting is to brighten a certain work area, providing just enough contrasting light to enhance your productivity of the designated work, limit shadows, and cut back on any glare. Task lighting is most effective when used as a supplement to general lighting in workspaces areas.

As we get older, our vision is getting worse, which is why task lighting is so effective in preventing eye strain. The types of workspaces in the house that task lighting typically centres around are cooking, reading, studying, painting, sewing, and other kinds of hobbies that are stationary.

Just like general lighting, task lighting can come from many LED light sources, such as LED Spot lights and LED PAR38.

Parabolic aluminized reflector or LED PAR38 is one of the best applications for LED due to its directional nature, and it’s used in recessed and track lighting. Track lighting is often used to take light to odd corners and critical workspace areas.

LED Spot lights are great for highlighting certain areas in the home, for decor, or hobbies. To get the most of the light, you want the LED Spotlights directly above the work surfaces. It is also practical to install a single switch for task lighting, independent of the room’s overall lighting switch.

Accent LED lighting

Accent lighting is used to bring particular attention to unique architectural design, bring out the beauty of artwork of paintings, get the focus on flower arrangements, enhance the texture or colour of the walls, or show off the light fixture itself. The primary function of accent lighting is to create a focal point for the room, adding a dimension to the environment, so it plays along with general lighting. Accent lighting requires an understanding of where items might be placed that deserve particular attention.

LED Spot lights for homes are a beautiful addition to your decor and also help you in highlighting the essential things and driving attention towards the things that you want. It creates visual interest in items in the room and can enhance almost anything.

The key is to make this illumination more precise and of higher intensity than the surrounding ambient light.

Decorative LED lighting

Romantic dinner for two on the porch illuminated by LED lights.

Decorative lighting fixtures are often meant to look attractive and enhance the look of the space as a design element, rather than provide much useful light. Wall sconces and chandeliers are the two most common decorative products.

Decorative lighting should complement and add visual interest to the home interior, as well as provide or contribute to the overall lighting solutions.

Adding decor, beauty, and style using decorative lighting is also an important reflection of the theme and style of the space. Decorative lighting can also contribute to a feeling of hospitality and comfort.

By combining and layering these lighting types, your home environment will be more attractive, exciting, and inviting.

Conclusion

As energy costs continue to rise, homeowners are looking for simple ways to reduce energy costs. The most tried and true practice is to turn off lights when a room is not in use.

Choosing the right fixtures for your home means choosing the right light source. Incandescent lamps provide excellent colour and are easily dimmable, but also consume a lot of energy and burn out quickly. Compact fluorescent lamps use 75% less energy, are more efficient, and run at a cooler temperature, but become less and less efficient over time.

LED light sources to offer great quality, lower energy use, and longer life – the best of both worlds.

The key is to spread out lighting in your home space to ensure adequate lighting. Ambient LED lights are ideal for lighting up any room in your home, as they emit a warm and gentle light that creates a comfortable lighting environment. To get the most out of your lighting design, keep fixtures and lamps free of dirt. Whenever possible, use dimming controls.

To create a lighting environment with no distraction to the eyes, use multiple Eco Origin LED light products such as LED Downlights, LED Spot lights, LED Globes, LED Panels or LED PAR38 that illuminates the space sufficiently without producing shadows. Multiple light sources eliminate hot spots and harsh contrasts as they increase the overall amount of light.

In today’s competitive business environment the right lighting solutions can have a crucial impact on the way employees think, feel, and work!
