A reverse-cycle air conditioner does not create heat the way a gas heater or an electric resistance heater does. It moves warm air from outside into your home. That’s why it can turn one unit of electricity into around three to five (sometimes up to six) units of heating energy, depending on the model and conditions, according to energy.gov.au.

A gas heater burns fuel and loses some of that energy up the flue. An electric resistance heater only ever gives you back as much heat as the electricity you put in. That gap in efficiency is why reverse-cycle systems usually win on running costs, even when electricity looks pricier than gas on paper.

2026 Victorian Electricity Prices: What You Will Actually Pay

Put that efficiency gain next to actual rates and the case gets concrete. From 1 July 2026, the Essential Services Commission reduced the Victorian Default Offer by around 5% for households, saving the average customer about $84 a year.
